1. Preparing For a Family Holiday

Plan outfits ahead of time

Make sure to check the climate of the country & plan your outfits accordingly, as children who are dressed comfortably will be happier in a new environment. Let your kids have a say in their outfits so there’s a lesser chance of them throwing a tantrum during the trip, just because they didn’t like the outfits. This will also build up excitement for the trip & ensure a better time for everyone.

Pack systematically

Take a zip-top bag for each outfit & put everything into the bag; and when you’re done for the day, just chuck the dirty clothes back in. Don’t let the little ones pack their own rucksacks as they tend to bring along unnecessary items, but do let them have a say as it teaches them to be responsible for their belongings. Just remember to go through the packed rucksacks & take out inessential items before departure!

Prepare in advance

Remember to check in online and print out boarding pass ahead of time to skip long queues at airport and avoid a potential tantrum from the kids. Plan activities for the entire length of flight & bring items such as new toys, books & snacks to make flying with kid easier—just keep them as a surprise until the situation calls for it.

Pick comfort

Book hotels with lots of kid-friendly amenities as you will not actually be spending every waking hour exploring; and there will certainly be days where you spend the whole day in the hotel. Make sure you do your research on the facilities offered by the hotel, as not every hotel offers a pool / a playground. Go the extra mile by picking a hotel that offers specific amenities for kids such as a game room or a kids’ club—these will offer them a place to expend their energy.

2. Capturing Picture-Perfect Memories

While some may feel that you’re missing out on the travel experience if you spend your time taking photos, we’re here to show you why capturing memories actually make your family vacation better!

Remember better

As time passes, you will need help to refresh your memory & what’s better than photos that you took yourself? Memories are powerful as they tie us to people, places & emotions. Taking photos help you to hang on to those memories a little longer & make it easy to revisit the lovely moments another time!

Capture the early days

Kids grow up quickly and as they get older, you may want to remember those early days. One of the best ways to do that is by capturing the memories on camera. How many of you can remember the exact moment that your child walked for the first time, called your name for the first time, and laughed for the first time? The same goes for family travels, Be it the moment your children overcome their fear of heights, or the first time they managed to sit through the entire flight without crying, make sure to capture these firsts so you can hold them near to your memory and heart.

View things from a different perspective

Hand your child a camera, as this is a good way to learn a little more about your children’s world & how they perceive their surroundings. Consider getting a digital camera for kids, one they can easily hold and operate. It’s a great way to document their own journey & help them to express themselves better. It also teaches kids to look at the world from a different perspective as they set out to capture things that are interesting to them. Parents can also make the trip more fun & educational by giving them a theme to document the journey with their camera and let them discover new things. If your child can write or draw, get them to make notes & illustrate their experiences! It’ll be lovely to revisit their photos, notes, and drawings in the future.

Strengthen your family bonds

When the camera is entrusted to them, kids realise that they have to treat it with care, as the camera is not a plaything for them to throw around. By letting your child handle the camera, it shows them that you trust them and have faith in them, which builds up their confidence. As the parent, you learn to let go & let them be kids, while they learn about responsibility & the importance of being cautious when handling pricey objects. This can help to build a stronger bond between you and your child.

3. Exploring With Your Family

A family vacation isn’t just a getaway with your nearest and dearest, it’s also a great time for you to learn and grow together. But how exactly does exploration and discovery benefit your family? Let’s find out!

Learn and develop new skills

Embarking on adventures opens you up to experiences that can help you grow, and pick up new knowledge and skills. When you try something for the first time—whether it’s interacting with wild animals, or staying in a new place—you can develop new skills that may eventually influence your daily actions. Over time, as you continue exercising these skills, you will be able to do things more quickly and easily. Say for example, you put your young children in charge of picking out their own outfits during the vacation. As they get used to this habit, they soon start dressing themselves more quickly & will rely less on you for help with their wardrobe.

Boost self-esteem

Picking up new ideas & lessons throughout your trip helps improve your self-esteem as you begin to understand more things. This form of continuous learning & mastering skills through daily practice helps you succeed at the things you work hard to achieve. And with every accomplishment made, you are able to build your confidence! Isn’t that a great feeling? So take yourself and your kids someplace where you can explore a new unknown with your family—the zoo, perhaps? Let your children feed the animals & teach them about various animal traits. Quiz them on what they remember & make it a point to cheer them on when they dare to do something different like feed a tiger or go rock-climbing! As you end the day on a high note, you’ll be able to leave with the knowledge that you have all picked up something useful while having a great time together.

Grow closer as a family

Planning a holiday with your family provides more opportunities for your family to create more precious shared memories that you can cherish forever. Developing a new skill is always a bonus, and it is even more enjoyable when you do it with your adorable kids who share in the fun and laughter! Soon, the days where your children value their independence & privacy over shared moments will be upon you, so treasure all the quality time you get to spend together. All this time spent together not only builds closer familial ties, but also helps your children feel more secure & confident about your love, which strengthens their emotional health.
