It is easy to get active in Singapore with its busy calendar of sporting events held year-round. Those keen to break a sweat and challenge themselves can sign up for a variety of endurance sports events ranging in themes and catering to various fitness levels. The best part? They will take you to all corners of Singapore for a different perspective of the cityscape while keeping you motivated to exercise.
Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon
Conferred Gold Label status by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore offers arguably one of the most scenic running routes in Singapore. It’ll take you past various iconic landscapes in the city, such as the stunning Marina Bay area, the stately Civic District, and along the breezy East Coast. The full marathon is 42.195 kilometre-long, but participants can also opt for the half-marathon (21.1km), the 10-kilometre run, or team up with friends and run the relay ekiden (a Japanese term for long-distance relay running races). There’s also something for the little ones—young budding athletes can participate in the 600-metre kids’ dash along Singapore’s premier shopping street Orchard Road!
The Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore takes place in December. Sign up or find out more on the official website.
OSIM Sundown Marathon
This one’s for the insomniacs and night owls. Sleep can wait when you sign up for the Sundown Marathon, which takes place overnight and is Singapore’s first, and Asia’s largest, night marathon. See the city in a different light as you pass iconic locations after dark, while enjoying the cool night air. Even if you don’t feel up to a full marathon, this sports event includes a 5km run, a 10km run, 10km team run and a half-marathon that you can sign up for. There’s even a fun run that kids can enjoy. This immense annual gathering of running enthusiasts also involves a wide variety of fringe activities. Enjoy carnival games, tasty bites from pop-up food stalls and live music as you cool down after testing your limits. Best of all, proceeds from all your running and revelry go to charity.
The Sundown Marathon will take place on 19 May 2018. Sign up or find out more on the official website.
If you’d rather travel on wheels, sign up for the OCBC Cycle that brings together cycling enthusiasts from across Singapore and around the world annually. Mingle with likeminded hobbyists and challenge yourself in categories like the 42-kilometre Sportive Ride and the 23-kilometre Straits Times Ride. Routes for kids of different ages are also available, so register early to enjoy discounted sign-up fees. You will enjoy beautiful photo opportunities too when you cycle past iconic landmarks in Singapore.
OCBC Cycle will be held on 5-6 May 2018. Sign up or find out more on the official website.
If you love running but aren’t too keen on intense competition, sign up for any of the fun runs held in the city throughout the year. Take things easy and enjoy the experience while seeing the city. Already, the year kicked off with the Transformers Run through the island-resort of Sentosa, complete with a themed carnival for some family fun. For an added element of thrill and fun, sign up for The Colour Run, or The Music Run (21 April 2018), which will have you pounding the pavement to the tempo of piped-in tunes. Or, take on challenging obstacle courses with the Spartan Race (24 March 2018)!
