Gastech 2023

Gastech 2023 welcomed a record-breaking turnout of over 44,000 attendees at the Singapore EXPO Convention and Exhibition Centre from 5 to 8 September 2023. This marked the second time the city-state played host to the world’s largest energy exhibition and conference for natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen, climate technologies, and low-carbon solutions.

Supported by Enterprise Singapore and Singapore Tourism Board, the event served as a pivotal forum to steer the industry towards a more sustainable and secure energy future. Policymakers, investors, and academics joined global business leaders and energy professionals in discussing key issues that drive the energy industry.

With a track record of generating billions of dollars in contracts, the exhibition provided an excellent platform for participants to network, do business, and explore the latest energy innovations. Spread over six halls, more than 750 exhibitors from across the entire energy value chain showcased their products, services, and technologies.

Singapore’s position as a major global energy trading hub is one of many reasons we chose this destination, said Chris Hudson, President of dmg events, the organiser of Gastech.

“We see Singapore as a gateway to not just Southeast Asia, but Asia. It's where people can come freely to do business,” added Hudson. “Partnerships are key to solving some of the world's biggest energy problems, and those big conversations are taking place in Singapore."

Driving critical discussions towards a greener future

Gastech 2023 provides a crucial forum for government and business leaders to discuss the challenges and opportunities ahead, as the energy industry continues to undergo major transformation.

In the Opening Ceremony speech, Dr Tan See Leng, Singapore’s Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, highlighted Gastech’s role in convening key stakeholders “to plan for a net-zero future with a significant role for natural gas.”

The 2023 Strategic Conference programme featured high-level ministerial sessions, leadership roundtables as well as technical and commercial conferences centred on the world’s evolving energy needs.

More than 600 world-renowned speakers shared their insights across 116 sessions and six strategic themes: energy supply security, natural gas as an enabler of the energy transition, climate technology, next-generation energy solutions, and the energy workforce.

Prominent speakers included Joseph McMonigle, Secretary General of the International Energy Forum; Lorenzo Simonelli, Chairman and CEO of Baker Hughes; Meg O’Neill, CEO and Managing Director of Woodside Energy, and other thought leaders.

“Gastech is an important conference for us because it brings together the people who matter across the LNG value chain,” said exhibitor Aw Kah Peng, Chairman of Shell Companies in Singapore. With the fast-paced growth in Asia comes a rising need for energy, and Aw believes that Singapore will play an important role in the energy trade’s journey towards cleaner and lower-carbon solutions.

The event also marked significant strides in unified commitments to decarbonisation. On 7 September, the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) and the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) signed a two-year Coalition Partnership agreement towards developing global guidelines on the use of ammonia as a marine fuel.

The transformative power of climate technologies

Recognising the rising importance of climate technology in global decarbonisation, Gastech expanded its 2023 edition with a new Climatetech zone that includes a dedicated exhibition and conference programme.

On the show floor, attendees explored the latest solutions, services, and cutting-edge technologies designed to address climate change and decarbonise the value chain. These ranged from physical technologies such as carbon capture and direct air capture projects, to digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and analytics systems. Besides new and emerging technologies, Climatetech exhibitors also showcased existing climate technologies available for development at scale.

Focused on credible, tech-enabled routes to net zero, the new conference programme convened key energy players, policy experts, investors, and major technology companies. The sessions were enriching as speakers shared learnings and insights on strategic and cross-industry partnership initiatives, new funding mechanisms, and proven strategies for turning ideas into practical solutions.

For Paul Sullivan, Senior Vice President, Global LNG and FLNG of Worley and Executive Committee member of the Gastech Conference, the event has “created a sense of purpose for the industry to move forward.”

“This conference has enabled us to refocus on where the markets are going, and how we’re going to deal with them. We have a responsibility not only for the big industrial users like Asia, but for the world, particularly the billions of people without access to energy,” he said.

As the event moves to its next destination in 2024, the discussions and collaborations ignited here in Singapore are set to resonate worldwide, driving progress towards a more sustainable and inclusive energy future for all.
