Revolutionising Asia’s travel industry is Yeoh Siew Hoon, whose big dreams of creating a career out of travelling the world paid off with Web In Travel, a travel technology community for the digital-age explorer.

Yeoh started her career as a crime reporter in her hometown of Penang, Malaysia, before moving to Kuala Lumpur, and later Hong Kong, to pursue her interest in lifestyle journalism.

In the mid-1990s, she came to Singapore because she wanted to be closer to her family in Malaysia. At the same time, she co-founded Venture Asia Publishing, a business-to-business publishing firm that specialises in travel publications.

She was also an early adopter of the Internet who had set up her own editorial website long before major brands boarded the content bandwagon. After witnessing the technological disruption experienced by traditional media in 2005, she decided that the time was ripe for a change in the travel industry and set up her own company – Web In Travel.

“That was a pivotal moment in my career, (as I saw that) the Internet was going to come and change everything, especially journalism, publishing, how we deliver content to readers,” she said.

Web In Travel started as a Singapore-based company that focused on travel industry trade conferences. Since its founding, it has staged successful conferences from Japan to Australia. The latest 2017 Singapore conference was held at Sands Expo and Convention Centre and featured speakers who were senior executives from travel industry titans such as Expedia, Kayak and Ctrip.

However, the company has grown to be more than just a conference planner. It is now a must-read news site for anyone who is passionate about travel and the technologies that enable it.

In its initial years, Web In Travel received backing and support from the Singapore Tourism Board, which recognised its potential as a game-changer. Yeoh also credits the company’s success to Singapore’s hospitable environment for networking.

“It’s quite easy to make contacts and build networks here, these which help open your business to opportunities globally,” she explained.

Today, Web In Travel is wholly owned by American media company Northstar Travel Media and Yeoh leads Northstar’s Asia-Pacific expansion as its editorial director. Despite the success that her passion has brought her, she remains true to her roots as a writer and journalist.

“All I know is that I love to create content that sparks ideas in people,” she says, “I’m still trying to figure out what the true outcome of my passion is. Where will it bring me?”
