Preparing for the city-state’s future needs
DesignSingapore Council has collaborated with the Ministry of Health and healthcare providers in researching and designing health and wellness for elderly people in Singapore. Participants discussed designing for the aged in a workshops series that covers design ethnography, global trend studies and design innovation, to create new products and improve existing services using infocomm technology and design. Participate in Design(P!D) is a non-profit design organization that helps neighbourhoods and public institutions design with people and not for people to create community-owned spaces and solutions. The Lien Foundation, a philanthropic organisation, initiated the Happy Coffin Design Project, where designers and the creative community co-designed coffins for the elderly residents in nursing homes and hospices to rid the stigma and fear of death, and transform the coffin design into life-affirming expressions of art. The Foundation also organises events and competitions that promote design and its uses; and conducts research and studies on applying design for social good. It also provides grants for design-related projects.
The design for Sectoral Innovation and Transformation programme (SIT) by DesignSingapore Council aims to design infocomm technology (ICT) solutions for the healthcare sector using a user-centred design process. SIT projects brings together designers, healthcare workers, ICT professionals, care givers and the elderly to research, prototype and design ICT solutions for enhancing the lives of the elderly. SIT projects include researching and designing wearable technologies and apps to promote preventive holistic health, and developing design and communication programmes to encourage lifelong healthy eating.
