You can’t visit Singapore without noshing on hawker food that is world-famous for its seemingly endless variety and bold, exotic flavours. Some of the best local delights can be found at Chinatown Food Street and Tiong Bahru Market. There’s bound to be something for everyone, but to get you started here are some highlights.

At Chinatown Food Street on Smith Street, the hawkers sell their delicacies from street-side food carts for a touch of nostalgia. One unique dish to try is the Old Airport Road Satay Bee Hoon, a piquant noodle dish served with meat, vegetables and beancurd, topped with a delicious satay (spicy peanut) sauce. You should also get a plate of Food Street Fried Kway Teow Mee (stir-fried noodles) and check out the Maxwell Road Soon Soon Popiah (vegetable rolls) and Laksa (curry noodles).

Over at Tiong Bahru Market, located in the trendy heritage Tiong Bahru neighbourhood, mingle with locals as they order delectable delights from the plethora of stalls. Zhong Yu Yuan Wei Wanton Noodle does an excellent version of the classic pork dumpling and barbecued pork noodles. For something sweet, try the local desserts at Tiong Bahru Tau Suan, Pulut Hitam & Bubur Terigu. Tau suan is a sweet mung bean stew, pulut hitam is a black rice pudding with coconut milk and bubur terigu is a white wheat sweet porridge.

Modern Singapore flavours

Singapore is also a treasure trove of avant-garde cuisine, where talented chefs are not afraid to experiment with their dishes to create modern plates that are tinged with a touch of local flavours.
Must-try restaurants where you can get a taste of this Mod-Sin cuisine include Wild Rocket, which is helmed by Chef Willin Low, widely regarded as the pioneer of this genre, and Violet Oon Singapore, Singapore’s doyenne of Peranakan (Straits Chinese) cuisine. Check out the above mentioned spanner chilli crab linguini at Wild Rocket that’s served with a soft gooey onsen egg or roast chilean seabass with chai poh (preserved radish) confit and congee. At Violet Oon’s you must check out her signature dry laksa noodles and ultra-tender beef rendang (dry curry).

Another interesting establishment to check out is Bincho, which is a traditional kopitiam (coffeeshop) by day and a yakitori cocktail gastrobar by night. The coffeeshop is famous for its bak chor mee (minced pork noodles), while Bincho is known for its omakase (chef’s choice) dinners, where the chef serves up a menu specially selected depending on the best produce of the day.

If you have a sweet tooth to satisfy, Forty Hands and 2am:dessertbar should be on your itinerary. The former is a cool cafe that serves up an excellent latte paired perfectly with its signature Tau Sar Bun, a traditional bun filled with red bean paste. Over at 2am:dessertbar, Chef Janice Wong serves up imaginative desserts made with cutting-edge cooking techniques for an experience that’s bound to please even the most discerning gourmand.


The kopitiam where Bincho shares its space with is the very same establishment that was featured in Singapore director Eric Khoo's 1995 break-out film, Mee Pok Man.
