Start your day with a hearty breakfast at Mother Dough Bakery. This bakery along North Bridge Road boasts a range of freshly-baked treats, from almond croissants to chocolate cakes.
“On my off days, I love swinging by Mother Dough Bakery for their amazing pastries,” Sasha says. “Their sourdough breads are so good!”
Like most bartenders, Sasha’s late nights are fuelled by a penchant for a strong cup of coffee. “I’m a big coffee person,” Sasha enthuses. “Kurasu is in an amazing co-working space, so that’s really fun. It’s really chill, with really good Japanese coffee…they do the best dirty matcha latte.”
To tickle your taste buds with a sample of the drinks and merriment that await you, pay a visit to Atlas. Dubbed one of Asia’s best bars on the Asia’s 50 Best Bars list, the establishment famed for its Great Gatsby-esque aesthetics, sophisticated vibes and classic cocktails.
“There are so many great bars [in Singapore], but no two bars do the same thing,” Sasha marvels. “Operation Dagger is more experimental, Manhattan is a hotel bar that’s very hospitality-driven. And you have Atlas, which is very driven by its physical space and interior… Like, have you seen [this] space?”
“When I make a drink, it’s about being inspired by flavours, and the techniques I’ve learnt helps me to figure out how to incorporate them,” Sasha says.
To discover tastes that inspire nostalgia in Singaporeans, drop by The Coconut Club for dinner. Located along Ann Siang Hill, this beloved eatery serves up local favourites like nasi lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk, served with an array of side dishes) and chendol (shaved ice dessert). “The Coconut Club is very old school and traditional. It’s like something you’d eat growing up, at a hawker centre.”
Begin your night of bar-hopping in Chinatown, where the modern and the traditional meet in an intoxicating blend. “Chinatown is very unique, because it’s a heritage area that respects and preserves history, while still moving forward and staying relevant,” Sasha opines.
Your first stop of the evening—Employees Only (E.O.), which boasts both spectacular cocktails and a decadent spread of Western dishes like truffle grilled cheese and ribeye steaks. “E.O. focuses not only on their drinks, but also good food.”
Next up on your bar-hopping trail is a bar that’s home to Sasha’s favourite cocktail. Inspired by the literary works and life of American novelist Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man serves up a range of inspired concoctions, alongside stellar service in an idyllic lounge setting.
“Death in the Afternoon is both classic and very easy drinking,” Sasha enthuses. “It’s not just the drink you make but the service you give, and The Old Man delivers both.”
“Tippling’s been around for several years,” Sasha says, of the next bar on our list. “Their menu changes every time [I visit], and it’s not just the drinks that change, but also the concept. I think that’s really cool.” While this establishment’s menu evolves on a regular basis, the cocktails here are bound to be great conversation starters—previous offerings have been inspired by diverse themes, ranging from books like Perfume by Patrick Süskind to concoctions centred on evoking emotions.
If you’re looking to party into the wee hours of the night, be sure to make Kilo Lounge the last stop on your list. This club’s diverse setlist ranges from reggae on Thursday nights to EDM on Fridays.
“It’s gritty, raw and there’s tons of energy on the dance floor. The iconic graffiti on the wall makes it even more edgy with the right pinch of attitude”, Sasha shares. “It also boasts some of the best music acts in town.”
