Singapore Media Festival 2016 Ends on a High Note
Asia’s leading international media event, Singapore Media Festival (SMF), concluded its third edition with attendance from over 20,000 media and creative professionals, industry thought-leaders and fans of television and film from around the world.
Celebrating the best of Asian storytelling, SMF 2016 brought together constituent events including the Asia TV Forum & Market (ATF), ScreenSingapore (SS), Asian Television Awards (ATA) and Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF).
Asia TV Forum & Market and ScreenSingapore
Asia’s premier entertainment content market and conference, Asia TV Forum & Market (ATF) and ScreenSingapore 2016, returned from 6 to 9 December 2016 with its largest showing yet.
Launched by Mr. Chee Hong Tat, Minister of State for Communications and Information, the 17th edition saw record-breaking participation of over 5,000 attendees. More than US$244 million worth of deals and partnerships were facilitated during the three-day market.
Themed “Content on every screen”, the ATF and ScreenSingapore market floor was the largest to date, with 738 exhibiting companies representing key Asian brands and major studios including CBS Studios International, Disney, Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution Inc. and MGM Worldwide Television.
The market also featured a record high of 21 official pavilions representing countries from the Asia Pacific, Europe and North America, including new pavilions from Canada, Korea, Spain and Turkey.
Conference line-up intensified with keynotes
This year, the ATF also saw an enhanced line-up of heavyweight speakers from around the world. The four-day event saw top executives from renowned media companies, research houses and agencies sharing on various topics from industry and audience insights to digital trends and content dynamics, as well as emerging trends such as virtual reality technologies. The forum also saw industry experts coming together to discuss how the media industry will evolve through partnerships and collaborations, future TV formats as well as financing options for film production.
Launch of inaugural ATF Formats Pitch competition
With the tagline “New Ideas. New Talent. New Formats”, ATF Formats Pitch is the premier Asian pitching competition aimed at creators and producers of innovative concepts for new and original, non-scripted entertainment formats. Showcasing the best of ideas from Asia for export and development within and outside of the region, it serves as a platform to facilitate the exchange of ideas and talent between the leading international distribution arms of award-winning content and Asian-based producers.
The inaugural competition received entries from nine countries – Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Ukraine and the USA. The participants were given the opportunity to pitch their ideas to some of the media industry’s most experienced professionals. Leading producers and commissioning editors also offered advice to further develop the pitched ideas.
Xtreme Media Pte Ltd emerged as the winner amidst the intense competition, receiving a $20,000 prize comprising a $3,500 cash award and a $16,500 consultancy package from all3media International tailored for Xtreme Media to develop their proposal.
Asian Television Awards
The 21st Asian Television Awards (ATA) was held from 1 to 2 December 2016 at the Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre. Featuring performances by regional celebrities such as Charli XCX, Rossa and JJ Lin, the ATA drew about 1,350 entries from broadcasters, TV stations, pay-TV platforms and independent production houses. A total of 46 awards were given out to recognise and reward programming and production excellence in the Asian television industry.
