You may associate the name ‘Changi’ with the Singapore Changi Airport. But the coastal area is also home to charming eateries, an emotionally-charged museum and a boardwalk, that takes you past the beach. Here are some of the highlights in this eastern district.

The Changi Museum
World War II prisoners-of-war (POW) of different nationalities were interned in Changi Prison during the Japanese invasion of Singapore between 1942 and 1945. This museum remembers their suffering through photographs, letters, and a replica of the Changi Murals, painted by British POW Stanley Warren to keep the prisoners’ morale up. Visit the museum and be inspired by the heroic stories that unfolded in Changi during the war.

Built over the water on stilts, you can see hobby fishermen reeling in their catch of the day. You can also admire the sunset from the western end of the boardwalk. While there, do drop by Changi Beach Park which has a pristine stretch of sand. Start exploring from the main starting point located between the Civil Service Club (Changi) and the Changi Point Ferry Terminal.
Opening hours: 24 hours (Lights are turned on 7pm–7am daily)
Pulau Ubin is an island off the coast of Changi and one of the last few places in Singapore untouched by urban development. At Chek Jawa wetlands on the island, you can see marine life such as mudskippers, fiddler crabs and sea stars at low tide. A 1.1 kilometre boardwalk that runs past the coast and a mangrove area allows you to get up close to the flora and fauna without hurting them.
The island can be reached by a 15-minute bumboat ride from the Changi Point Ferry Terminal, 51 Lorong Bekukong, open from 7am–7pm.
