If you are backpacking or simply on a shoestring, Singapore has a wide range of hotels that will suit your budget. Here are six charming yet affordable hotels that offer solo travellers, large families, and even couples, an ideal place to stay while visiting the city-state.

Kam Leng Hotel

This four-storey heritage hotel has been standing proudly on Jalan Besar since its establishment in 1927. The lobby pays tribute to Kam Leng Hotel’s past, with old-school coffee tables, basket chairs and cabinets displaying Peranakan (Straits-born people of Chinese and Malay/Indonesian heritage) household objects beautifying the space.

All of the 70 rooms (from SGD 114/night), on the other hand, are decidedly modern thanks to bright pops of colour from the minimalist furniture. Go for the Superior Queen room (from SGD 154/night), which has windows that overlook the bustling alleys of the Jalan Besar neighbourhood.

Things to do in the neighbourhood:
There’s plenty to nosh on in the area. Chye Seng Huat Hardware serves excellent coffee; Tiramisu Hero whips up the mascarpone-rich dessert in cute jars; and then there’s The Bao Makers, whose gua bao—steamed bread shaped like a taco shell—are stuffed with fillings like salted egg shrimp and chilli crab.

The Pod

Inspired by the accommodation alternative that rose to fame in Japan in 1979, The Pod is a modern capsule hostel that’s adorned with minimalist furniture and tasteful artworks.

Most of the 100 beds (from SGD 50/night) here are in shared dorms, but The Pod also offers semi-private rooms—though be warned that they’re not fully soundproof. Female- and male-only options are also available. What the rooms lack in size, the hotel makes up for with perks. It offers complimentary laundry service, a buffet breakfast, free flow of coffee and tea, WiFi, and uses 300-thread-count sateen cotton sheets.

Things to do in the neighbourhood:
Make sure to check out the slew of stores in the area. Pop by reading room Looksee Looksee for a cup of tea from homegrown tea company A.muse Projects, admire home décor pieces in Scene Shang and Supermama, then explore Haji Lane. Here, eclectic merchandise like knitted bags and printed socks are aplenty, as are the Halal dining options.

Hotel YAN

The edgy façade and industrial-chic lobby of this hotel belie its affordability—Hotel YAN’s rooms start at only SGD 130/night. Plush sofas, wooden desks and chrome lamps adorn each room, which also come with complimentary drinks and snacks in their minibars. Opt for a room with a balcony so that you can take in views of the surrounding shophouses and narrow lanes. There’s also plenty to do nearby, as the hotel is within walking distance of two heritage neighbourhoods, Kampong Glam and Little India.

Things to do in the neighbourhood:
Score an ice cream cone from Creamery Boutique, or stuff yourself with affordable dim sum (bite-sized Chinese snacks) at Swee Choon Tim Sum Restaurant. Then make a stop at the 24-hour Mustafa Centre, which stocks electronics, toiletries, shoes, toys and jewellery across six huge storeys.

Hotel G

This chic option is your closest bet to a boutique hotel. Hotel G’s lobby is a quirky mix of old and new, with stylish murals, mosaic-tiled floors and sleek wooden furniture. Inside its rooms (from SGD 130/night), Scandinavian-inspired furniture plays well with the pastel-toned walls and other artsy touches, like feathers hanging from the ceiling.

The Mini G room is an excellent place to start for solo travellers. It comes with a free-to-use Handy X Phone that provides tips on where to go, what to do and cool things to see in Singapore. As a bonus, all guests get to enjoy free WiFi and access to the fitness centre.

Things to do in the neighbourhood:
Fuel up at Ninja Cut with its Japanese-inspired rice bowls before making for Bras Basah Complex, where the corridors are lined with second-hand bookstores as well as arts and crafts shops. For more artsy pursuits nearby, check out the Singapore Art Museum, National Design Centre and National Museum of Singapore—they’re just a short walk away.

Lloyd’s Inn

True to its mission of being an oasis in the heart of the city, Lloyd’s Inn places emphasis on nature, light and comfort. You will notice this the moment you step into the light-filled lobby, which is set with monochromatic tones and lush foliage, and into each of the rooms, where wooden panels, potted plants and natural light abound.

Book The Standard (from SGD 158/night), and then chill by the roof terrace or in the dipping pool. If you’re unsure of where best to go, the hotel publishes digital walking guides on its website, featuring a selection of trendy cafés, design stores and eateries.

Things to do in the neighbourhood:
Explore Fort Canning Park’s winding, tree-lined trails, or snap a few shots of the House of Tan Yeok Nee, which is the last 19th-century, Chinese-style mansion in Singapore.

Tai Hoe Hotel

The charm of Tai Hoe Hotel lies in its personalised service. Since its opening in the 1940s, the hotel has been family-run, and will do its utmost to cater to guests—even if that means delivering a plate of chicken rice from a hawker centre to your room. All you have to do is make a request to the friendly staff at the concierge desk.

The rooms (from SGD 70/night) themselves are modestly furnished, and each guest can request to use a mobile phone to make local and IDD calls or get GPS directions at no additional charge.

Things to do in the neighbourhood:
There’s a good selection of local restaurants in the area. Azmi Restaurant whips up chapatti (Indian flatbread) and keema (a thick mutton stew), Good Chance Popiah Eating House lets you build your own popiah (fresh spring roll stuffed with turnip and other accompaniments) from scratch, and Ananda Bhavan is famed for its hearty vegetarian curries.
