Bak kwa from Bee Cheng Hiang

Bak kwa from Bee Cheng Hiang

Singapore’s answer to jerky, bak kwa (barbecued meat) is highly addictive with its smoky, savoury-sweet taste. Though it has now grown to over 300 outlets across almost a dozen countries, local brand Bee Cheng Hiang had humble beginnings, with founder Teo Swee Ee first selling the homemade slices in Chinatown from a pushcart back in 1933.

Finest teas from TWG

You would be forgiven if you thought TWG was a classic European brand. The local luxury tea brand stands out with its old-world packaging, and boasts a mindboggling array of flavours, ranging from the classic 1837 Black Tea to the exotic Immortal Moment Tea, which mixes Ceylon black tea, vanilla and gold leaves. Try the Singapore Breakfast Tea, a green and black tea blend that features notes of rare spices indigenous to the island, or pay tribute to Singapore’s “Garden City” moniker with TWG’s range of aromatic floral teas.

Kaya from Ya Kun Kaya Toast

Kaya from Ya Kun Kaya Toast

Instead of marmalade, jam or butter, spread some creamy kaya (a traditional jam made from coconut and eggs) on your toast. Ya Kun Kaya Toast is the best place to buy a few jars—the brand has been around since 1944, and its kaya is best known for its sweet flavour, smooth texture and a lovely pandan aroma.
